Rewards4Earth plans to introduce crypto rewards for 1000 sports clubs in Australia
In a small coastal town north of Brisbane, Queensland, 20 members of the Coolum Surf Club are participating in a preliminary test of the Earth Points system, a crypto rewards platform from Australian company Rewards4Earth. Doug Flockhart, former CEO of Club Queensland, the body for community clubs in the state, spoke to Cointelegraph about how they aim to integrate the system through over 1,000 community clubs across Australia.
Flockhart said the top professional rugby league competition, the National Rugby League (NRL), is "very keen" on the idea and for Flockhart, it "verifies the ability of this system to deliver." He added that the top Australian rules football competition, the Australian Football League (AFL), has also expressed interest. In its early days, a group of just 20 members was chosen to test the proof-of-concept.
“Out of 20 people who used the app in the first fortnight, $106 was generated in fees to go back to the club, before we signed up to businesses in the area,” he said. "It was just those 20 people using the app to shop at their local supermarket and get the club revenue."
Businesses are incentivized to join through access to free marketing tools within the platform along with being able to cover their environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations. They can also accept Erth Points as payment which, like other cryptocurrencies, can be traded on exchanges for fiat.
Adoption was a sticking point for the system, given that it equates to nearly half of Australia’s population and 50% of club members are 45 years old or older, according to Flockhart.A key fact from early trails suggests that "it's easier to get 25 to 40-year-olds onboard", but older demographics "will be harder to get on board."
Rewards4Earth plans to introduce a blockchain - a decentralized ledger - into sports and cultural events. This will enable participants to earn tokens in the form of cryptocurrencies by simply attending matches and other events, such as concerts and circus performances.
