The Gamestop 'Falling Man' NFT saga showcases the power of people in the best possible way
The recent non-fungible token (NFT) listing on GameStop's Marketplace became the center of controversy in the NFT world. The listing received an overwhelming response from the community, prompting the market to take action within a day, showing how a community can come together to reverse the wrong. Titled "Falling Man", the NFT showed a man in a space suit falling down.
The NFT in question bore much resemblance to the infamous 9/11 photo of a man falling to death, which has since become a defining moment of the deadly attacks. Many believed that the NFT was copying the 9/11 victim and also infringing on the copyright of the image taken by the original photojournalist Richard Drew.
In one more conversation on the image stock subreddit GME Meltdown, a client brought up that the figure in NFT is a delivering of a current 3D model of a Russian flight suit made by a free craftsman, which was utilized without the first craftsman's consent. GameStop didn't answer Cointelegraph's solicitation for input at press time.
While GameStop faced backlash from the community, the incident opened a box of evidence from Pandora, which revealed that for how many people, NFTs became a means of making quick money at the cost of common human decency. The NFT frenzy began in March 2021 at the height of the bull run after digital artist Beeple's NFT art grossed $69.3 million.
Since then, NFTs have become a hot topic of discussion, and every other brand and celebrity is joining the phenomenon. With the rise in popularity, the ecosystem has also become a target of scammers, leading to an increase in copyright infringement and fake NFT sales.
However, the crypto community has always come together to show the power of the people. One such instance took place in May this year when the Solana (SOL) community came together to “scam” a scammer to get back some stolen NFTs.
This is an incredible display of how powerful people can be, harnessing the power of blockchain and wits for one marketplace. This will have a massive impact on the future of digital collectibles and NFTs as a whole, it also shows that Gamestop is ready to compete with Amazon and other retailers.
